Nicholas Angelich (Piano)
Born in the USA in 1970, Nicholas Angelich began studying
the piano at the age of five with his mother. At the age of
seven, he gave his first concert with Mozart’s Twenty-First Concerto
(K. 467) and at the age of thirteen he entered the Conservatoire
National in Paris where he studied under Aldo Ciccolini, Yvonne Loriod,
Michel Bйroff and Marie Franзoise Bucquet. During his studies Nicholas won First
Prize for piano and chamber music performing. The musician has attended
master-classes given by such virtuosi as Leon Fleisher, Dmitri Bashkirov, and
Maria Joгo Pires. In 1989 Angelich won the Second Prize at
the International Robert Casadesus Piano in Cleveland and in 1994
he took First Prize at the International Gina Bachauer Piano Competition.
In 1996 the musician was invited to collaborate with
the International Piano Foundation of Cadenabbia (Italy), while
in 2002 at the International Klavierfestival Ruhr (Germany) he won
the Young Talent Award from Leon Fleischer. He also performed there
in 2003.
The pianist’s debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under
Kurt Masur took place at the Lincoln Center in May 2003. Vladimir
Jurowski invited Nicholas to open the 2007–08 season of the Russian
National Orchestra in Moscow. The pianist has performed with
the Orchestre National de France under Marc Minkowski and Josep Pons,
the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Paavo Jдrvi,
the Orchestre National de Lyon and David Robertson, the Orchestre
Philharmonique de Monte Carlo under Jesъs Lуpez-Cobos and Kenneth Montgomery,
the St Petersburg Philharmonic under Alexander Dmitriev,
the Strasbourg and Montpellier Orchestras under Jerzy Semkow,
the Toulouse Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden in Amsterdam and Yannick
Nйzet-Sйguin in San Sebastiбn, the Orchestre de Chambre de
Lausanne under Christian Zacharias, the SWR Baden-Baden Orchestra under
Michael Gielen, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hugh Wolff and
Paavo Jдrvi, the Swiss-Italian Radio Orchestra under Charles Dutoit,
the Tonkьnstler Orchester under Kristjan Jдrvi, the Stuttgart Radio
Orchestra under Roger Norrington, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and
the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under Emmanuel Krivine, the Rotterdam

under Yannick Nйzet-Sйguin, the Seoul Philharmonic under Myung-Whun Chung,
the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Kazushi Ono and Vladimir Jurowski,
the Swedish Radio Orchestra under Daniel Harding and the Los Angeles
Philharmonic under Stйphane Denиve in addition to recitals in London,
Munich, Geneva, Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg, Rome, Lisbon, Brescia, Tokyo
and Paris. Nicholas Angelich is a regular guest at the Verbier Festival and
the Martha Argerich Project in Lugano. The musician made his
debut at the BBC Proms in July 2009 with the Scottish
Chamber Orchestra under Yannick Nйzet-Sйguin.
During his tours to countries throughout the world, Nicholas Angelich –
a great interpreter of both classical and romantic works – has performed all of
Beethoven’s sonatas and Liszt’s Annйes de pиlerinage cycle.
The pianist also has a keen interest in 20th century
music, first and foremost that of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Bartуk, Ravel,
Messiaen, Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Йric Tanguy and Pierre Henry, who
dedicated his Concerto for Piano without Orchestra to him.
Nicholas Angelich also has a keen interest in chamber music. He has
performed with musicians including Gautier and Renaud Capuзon, Maxim Vengerov,
Akiko Suwanai, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Joshua Bell, Gйrard Caussй, Daniel
Mьller-Schott, Wang Jian, the Paul Meyer Quarte, the Ysaяe Quartet,
the Prazak Quartet and the Йbиne Quartet.
His discography includes: for Harmonia Mundi a Rachmaninoff programme; for
Lyrinx a Ravel programme; and for Mirare Liszt’s Annйes de pиlerinage
(Choc prize from the magazine Le Monde de la
musique, CR recommendation of Classica Rйpertoire magazine) and
a Beethoven programme (Op. 26, Waldstein sonata,
Op. 111). For Virgin Classics he recorded a Brahms series featuring
Trios with the Capuзon brothers (Preis der deutschen
Schallplattenkritik), sonatas for violin and piano with Renaud Capuзon
(Diapason d’Or and Choc from Le Monde de la musique,
“Editor’s Choice” from Gramophone, Scherzo and Exceptional
magazines) and two Brahms recitals (Choc in the
Monde de la musique/BBC Music Choice). His discography also includes
a Beethoven recital with Akiko Suwanai (Decca) and Brahms’ Piano Concerto
No. 1 with Paavo Jдrvi and the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra
(Virgin Classics). His most recent release was Brahms’ Piano Concerto
No. 2, again with Paavo Jдrvi and the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra.
