Dmitry Khokhlov (Conductor)

People`s Artist of Russia
Dmitry Khokhlov`s name has adorned the playbills of leading concert halls throughout the world for over thirty-five years. His undeniable talent was first noted when as a student at the Moscow Conservatoire he was asked to conduct the State Symphony Orchestra of Kazakhstan. His first major success came at the I All-Union Festival of Creative Youth of Opera and Ballet, after which he was invited to be Assictant Conductor at the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theatre.
In 1977 he made his Leningrad Philharmonic debut as a conductor with the great Yevgeny Mravinsky.
After training at the Mariinsky Theatre, Dmitry Khokhlov became an Assistant Conductor with the Leningrad Philharmonic.
Thanks to his intense touring schedules with the Mariinsky Theatre, the Byelorussian Bolshoi Theatre and the Moscow and Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestras, by the 1980s Dmitry Khokhlov was an acclaimed genius. For some years was Principal Conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of Mongolia.
On his return, Dmitry Khokhlov was made Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the V. V. Andreyev Russian Folk Orchestra (formerly the Andreyev Imperial Russian), which was then experiencing difficulties. While planning celebrations to mark one century since the ensemble?s foundation, the new director faced an immense task.
A graduate of the Leningrad and Moscow Conservatoires and pupil of Professors Kudryavtseva and Khaikin, Dmitry Khokhlov took the orchestra beyond the confines of traditional arrangements of Russian folk songs; he developed programmes that were varied in form and genre, he created and emotional and simultaneously classically rigid performing style.
The repertoire of the V. V. Andreyev Orchestra is vast, a central part being formed by Petersburg composers who are eager to collaborate with the talented conductor, entrusting him with the premieres of their works. The expressive sound, refined lyricism, charm and laconicism, the filigree nature of each phrase all compose conductor Dmitry Khokhlov?s unique signature.
Over twenty years? work with the Andreyev Orchestra, Dmitry Khokhlov has performed many concert programmes with outstanding Russian and western singers such as Nesterenko, Noreika, Obraztsova, Borodina, Leiferkus, Hvorostovsky, Marusin, Gerello and Chernomortsev to name bu a few.
Dmitry Khokhlov continues to work in various musical genres. He conducts the Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academic Symphony Orchestra. In April 1999 he staged a production of Tchaikovsky?s opera Iolanta in New York with American and Russian performers.
2001 saw a concert of Russian music with a Japanese chorus and orchestra in Tokyo, and the same year the conductor performed symphony concerts at the festival Days of Russian Culture in Kazakhstan .
From 2002-2006 Dmitry Khokhlov appeared several times with opera companies in Byelorus, Moldavia, Kazakhstan and Tatarstan, the Kansai Philharmonic in Osaka (Japan) and and the Nationsl Symphony Orchestras of Azerbaijan, Byelorus, Moldavia, Kazakhstan and Karelia. In 2005 he was invited by the Kazakhstan Ministry of Culture to perform at a gala concert in Astana to mark the summit of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) in the presence of leaders of Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
From 1988 to the present, Dmitry Khokhlov has taught at the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire.
