Pyotr Tchaikovsky at the Mariinsky Theatre
The works of one of the public‘s favourite composers regularly adorn the Mariinsky Theatre‘s playbill. As the years pass, the music of Peter Tchaikovsky merely gains in the power of its attraction. His legacy is so multi-faceted that the theatre continues to turn to the composer‘s works again and again.
Today there are two productions of The Queen of Spades at the Mariinsky Theatre. The first was staged by Yuri Temirkanov, an acclaimed classical version of the work. The second is by director Alexander Galibin. The ballet The Nutcracker also exists in two versions: Vasily Vainonen‘s classical rendition where students of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet exhibit their skills, and Mihail Chemiakin‘s production. In 1999 the theatre staged a revival of The Sleeping Beauty, Marius Petipa‘s fairytale ballet to music by Tchaikovsky, an event of tremendous artistic significance. The theatre‘s repertoire also includes Konstantin Sergeyev‘s version of the same ballet. Since the first production at the Mariinsky Theatre, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov‘s masterpiece Swan Lake has rightly been recognised as one of the crowning glories of Russian ballet.
13 November - "Mazepa" (opera in three acts, six scenes)
15 November - "Swan Lake" (fantasy ballet in three acts (four scenes))

A New Mariinsky Theatre Festival
From 27–31 October the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall (ul. Dekabristov 37) will be hosting the Mariinsky Theatre‘s New Horizons Festival alongside the Jewel of Russia Festival in a programme of contemporary music. The Festival‘s unique programme includes one world premiere and four Russian premieres.
The New Horizons Festival aims to introduce the public to the greatest works by contemporary Russian and foreign composers. Each Festival, set to be an annual event, will focus on the works of a specific composer. This year focuses on successful young British composer Thomas Ades.
Ades was born in London in 1971 and has emerged as the greatest British composer of his generation. He is also a renowned pianist and conductor. At the age of thirty-six, Ades has received the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition (Asyla, 2000), which will have its Russian premiere at the Festival. At age twenty-eight he became Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and Arts, founded by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears; he is the only composer who has had an opera performed at Covent Garden during his lifetime within twenty years. The Festival will see the first Russian performance of the opera Powder Her Face as well as symphony works. This will be the first performance of Ades‘ music in Russia.
The Russian part of the playbill features symphony music by renowned representatives of the Petersburg school of composition Boris Tishchenko and Sergei Slonimsky as well as Valentin Silvestrov, a leading composer who has travelled the path from the avant-garde of the 1970s to the post-romantic tradition. The world premiere of Sergei Slonimsky‘s Fifteenth Symphony, dedicated to Valery Gergiev, is sure to be one of the Festival‘s highlights: this will be the first premiere of a composer of such renown at the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall.
The Festival programme opens on 27 October with a semi-staged production of Ades famous chamber opera Powder Her Face, based on the true story of the scandalous Margaret, Duchess of Argyll. Timothy Redmond will be conducting. The semi-staged version will be performed by the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra and soloists Maire O‘Brien, Valdine Anderson, Steven Richardson and Daniel Norman.
On 28 October Thomas Ades himself will be conducting one of his greatest works, the symphonic Asyla, which has received both critical acclaim and many prestigious awards. The concert programme also includes the Russian premiere of Gerald Barry‘s Chevaux-de-frise and Stravinsky‘s Les Noces and Concerto for Piano and Woodwinds.
On 29 October Valery Gergiev will be conducting a concert that includes the Russian premiere of Thomas Ades‘ Violin Concerto, Boris Tishchenko‘s Second Symphony Marina and the world premiere of Sergei Slonimsky‘s Fifteenth Symphony.
The Festival concludes on 31 October with a concert of works by Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Valentin Silvestrov.

The Mariinsky Theatre‘s major tour to Vienna comes to a close
Today the Mariinsky Theatre‘s first major tour to Vienna in recent times comes to a close with a performance of Eugene Onegin. Before now no Russian musical theatre has appeared with such a major tour in Vienna.
Over ten days of sell-out performances at the Theater an der Wien, the demanding Austrian public have seen one of last season‘s premieres – Prokofiev‘s The Gambler and the opera Eugene Onegin; the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra has also given several symphony concerts – in Vienna at the Konzerthaus and in Graz at the Franz-Liszt-Saal.
The tour has seen the participation of such famed Mariinsky Theatre singers as Vladimir Galuzin, Sergei Alexashkin, Gennady Bezzubenkov, Mikhail Kit, Yevgeny Nikitin, Lyubov Sokolova, Alexander Gergalov and Yevgeny Akimov.
Continuing the tradition of presenting young soloists at the world‘s finest venues, the Theatre cast young singers in the lead roles: Sergei Semishkur as Lensky (debut), Irina Mataeva as Tatiana and Yekaterina Semenchuk as Olga, while in The Gambler the role of Polina was performed by Natalia Timchenko.
In reviews of The Gambler the Austrian press noted the outstanding skills and performing style of Vladimir Galuzin as Alexei, who proved himself "a great operatic actor whom you understand even if you don‘t know the language he is singing in" (Der Standard, 18.10.2007). The same critic referred to Temur Chkheidze‘s production as surprisingly "sound and unobtrusive".
The Austrian press enthused about the brilliant performance level of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, who was called the "indefatigable motor of the Mariinsky Theatre" (Der Neue Merker, 19.10.2007).

The Opera and Symphony Programme of the Mariinsky Theatre‘s US Festival Has Come to a Close
The opera and symphony programme of the Mariinsky Theatre‘s festival in Orange County (California, USA) has come to a close. This large-scale festival opened on 6 October; the following nine days saw a performance of Wagner‘s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen in full, Musorgsky‘s opera Boris Godunov and symphony concerts by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra.
World press comments on the Mariinsky Theatre‘s performances:
"Given the cursory sophistication of this production, it had better sound good if it wants to survive. George Tsypin‘s giant statuary stands on or is draped across the stage. Hollow, with wrinkled metallic surfaces, and modular for easy disassembly, these figures are accessorized by small penguinlike shapes. (Those of a certain age will remember Al Capp‘s comic-strip shmoo.) Dancers lurk and do imitations of flames.
It falls to lighting to set moods and induce action. Mr. Tsypin‘s figures light up from inside when emotions demand. Sheets of ghastly reds and greens, like chemical spills, play over the stage. At Fafner‘s death, the impression is of someone playing with a wall switch. The Woodbird appears onstage wearing beads and flapping her arms. On the other hand, she (she being Anastasia Kalagina) sang beautifully. Mikhail Petrenko made Fafner‘s bass notes shine.
No Siegfried has looked more like Siegfried than Leonid Zakhozhaev: tall, broad-shouldered, athletic, long hair flowing. Yet Vasily Gorshkov‘s Mime carried the early hours of "Siegfried." His sly, dry humor dominated Act I, and he also outgunned Mr. Zakhozhaev‘s serviceable tenor and easily upstaged Vadim Kravets‘s faceless Wotan. Olga Sergeyeva threw her big, rich soprano at Brьnnhilde with an exuberance that threatened vocal steadiness. Viktor Chernomortsev (Alberich) and Zlata Bulycheva (Erda) both sang well.
It was in the pit that the listener found "Siegfried." Given a dreadful workload, the Kirov players never faltered in accomplishment and devotion. Mr. Gergiev is not a conductor to loiter over Wagner, and here the music was swift and action-packed". (Bernard Holland. "A Russian Ring Comes to Southern California" ‘‘ New York Times. 11.10.2006)
"Sheer Russian-ness offered significant attractions. Gergiev creates a unique orchestral sound. He dotes on bass instruments. "Rhinegold" begins in the depths of the orchestra, representing the depths of the Rhine River, so from that first deep E flat, Gergiev was in his element". (Mark Swed. "O.C. grabs the Ring" ‘‘ Los Angeles Times. 9.10.2006)
On 17 October the Mariinsky Theatre‘s festival will continue with performances by the ballet company, which will present Prokofiev‘s Romeo and Juliet.

Triumph of the Russian Ring
The New York press reaction to the first performances of the Mariinsky Theatre‘s
Der Ring des Nibelungen at the renowned Metropolitan Opera
The Mariinsky Theatre‘s tour to the renowned Metropolitan Opera in New York, USA, with Wagner‘s Der Ring des Nibelungen has come to a close. The Mariinsky Theatre‘s finest Wagnerian singers are performing under Valery Gergiev to packed audiences. About fifty journalists from leading New York and American media have received accreditation to performances.
Critics have bestowed high praise on the quality of the productions:
"Mr. Gergiev drew an organic, rhapsodic and often riveting performance from the orchestra and the generally impressive cast.
At a time when the national characteristics of orchestras are increasingly homogenized into an international sound, the Kirov Orchestra seems distinctively Russian, with its dusky colorings, reedy and plaintive winds, mellow and weighty brass, and thick, expressive strings.
The mezzo-soprano Larissa Diadkova, who has performed Fricka at the Met, again proved terrifying in the role, singing with abandon, power and smoky colorings.
The baritone Nikolai Putilin was a wonderfully bellowing Alberich, and Vasily Gorshkov, with his agile and cutting tenor voice, conveyed the cleverness of the demigod Loge.
The tenor Oleg Balashov brought a virile sound and crisp delivery to his performance as Siegmund in "Die Walkьre" and worked in poignant sympathy with his lovely and vulnerable Sieglinde, the soprano Mlada Khudoley, the vocal standout of the production so far, who has a lush, sizable and luminous voice. The Brunnhilde, Olga Sergeeva, gave an impassioned and often subtle account of this touchstone and demanding role".
(Anthony Tommasini. The New York Times. 16.07.2007).
"The panting and galloping Romanticism at the beginning of Act II was extraordinary. And the conductor is a master at bringing out nervousness, tension. We heard this, particularly, in the long, edgy conversations between Wotan and Fricka, then Wotan and Brunnhilde. And the Valkyries‘ ride had less bombast and more character than usual.
Making a boffo appearance was the Sieglinde, soprano Mlada Khudoley. Initially, she sang with a tenderness – and an unforcedness – that really drew the listener in. This was a lovable voice, in a much-loved character. And when the music turned fortissimo, that voice did not turn harsh, but retained its essential beauty. Ms. Khudoley is a fine actress to boot, as she proved in Sieglinde‘s mini-mad scene (late in the second act).
Brunnhilde was Olga Sergeeva, who has sung that role at the Met before (and under Mr. Gergiev). She can handle the part, which is something to be grateful for, because Brunnhildes don‘t grow on trees. She was never less than adequate, and, at her best, she was touching".
