Dear Friends,

Along with the long-awaited coming of summer to St. Petersburg we are once again hosting the Stars of the White Nights festival, now in its thirteenth year. Since the time of its inception it has exerted a magnetic appeal, drawing lovers of Russian culture from all over the world to St Petersburg, each year presenting a unique programme of ballets, operas and symphony music.

The 2005 festival opens to a premiere of Richard Wagnerґs opera Tristan und Isolde, which is making its return to the theatreґs repertoire almost one hundred years after the legendary production by Vsevolod Meierhold. The new production is by the young but already acclaimed Dmitry Chernyakov.

One of the distinguishing features of this yearґs festival programme is the series of concerts and performances by musical ensembles and theatre companies from countries on the Baltic Sea. The opera programme includes all the premieres of the current season, performances by stars of the Mariinsky Opera Company Olga Borodina, Anna Netrebko and Vladimir Galuzin as well as world-renowned bass Renй Pape in Wagnerґs Parsifal, the Finnish National Opera (Rasputin with Matti Salminen in the main role) and the Norwegian Opera (Peer Gynt) in addition to chamber programmes with soloists from the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers.

The symphony programme will see performances of works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Stravinsky and Prokofiev by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and the Mariinsky Young Philharmonic Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Orchestra, the Sinfonietta Cracovia and violinists Vadim Repin and Nikolaj Znaider. Among guest conductors at this yearґs festival are Gianandrea Noseda, Manfred Honeck, John Axelrod, Joel Revzen and Neeme, Paavo and Kristjan Jдrvi. This yearґs festival is noteworthy as it sees the performance of all nine of Beethovenґs symphonies.

The ballet programme includes the great classics and works which reflect the early 20th century search for new choreographic language. There will be performances of the theatreґs most recent works – two ballets designed and staged by Mihail Chemiakin and ballets by George Balanchine and William Forsythe with stars of the Mariinsky Ballet Company. The festival will see performances by the Bolshoi Ballet Company, the Warsaw Opera Ballet and the Alvin Ailey Dance Company from the USA.

One Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bolshoi Theatre. This will be the first time the tetralogy has been performed in Moscow by soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre and its orchestra.

I hope that the festival will once again be a unique celebration of music and leave you with many happy memories of St Petersburgґs white nights!

Valery Gergiev
