The State Hermitage, with the participation of The Creative Alliance of Museum Employees of St Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast, an Interregional Public Organization, acting in support of the UNESCO principle of rebirth of our non-material legacy from the past, has developed the concept of an annual Festival of the Grand Waltz.

The "Grand Waltz" was named a winner of the Intermuseum-2003 Festival in the category of "Best Museum Project." It brings together under the aegis of the Hermitage cultural institutions of St Petersburg and Vienna and makes it possible not only to strengthen foreign cultural relations and popularize St Petersburg‘s culture among the regions of our country and abroad but also to facilitate the patriotic education of citizens of Russia by acquainting them with timeless spiritual and intellectual values.

Within the context of the Festival of the Grand Waltz, each year a series of 11 concerts is performed, one for each of the summer seasons that Strauss spent in Petersburg, beginning with the 1856 season in Pavlovsk. The year 2006 marks the 150th anniversary of that beginning. Thanks to the efforts of the organizers of the Festival of the Grand Waltz, Strauss‘s melodies also can be heard these days in Pavlovsk, a city of glorious musical traditions of the "first Russian philharmonic orchestra" where the idea of concerts for the broad public was first born. Using unique multifaceted historical parallels and strictly observing the laws of classical dramaturgy regarding unity of place, time and action, this festival will be held for the fifth time in a jubilee year in order to recreate an interrupted link of past and present. This year the concerts will be held in the Hermitage Theatre, the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace, the State Palace of Congresses (Konstantinovsky Palace), the Great Palace of Peterhof, the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo and the Rose Pavilion of Pavlovsk, where the great Austrian composer performed. Each concert will not merely "copy" a program from the Strauss seasons, but will develop the traditions of public music-making laid down 150 years ago. The 5th Festival has evenings of symphonic and chamber music, vocal and choreographic programs.

Among the participants are musicians of large stature who have made important contributions to the history of musical culture: the world renowned Austrian conductor and specialist on authentic performance of Strauss‘s music Christian Pollak; soloist of the Dresden State Operetta Isabella Ma-Zah (soprano), the well known Russian conductors Mikhail Sinkevich, Alexei Karabanov, Alexander Kantorov and Vladimir Altshuler; the Terem Quartet; soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre and well known instrumentalists cellist Sergei Roldugin and pianists Larisa Gergieva, Vladimir Mishchuk and Alexei Orlovsky; as well as the ballet troupe of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory of St Petersburg (N. Dolgushin, Artistic Director), the State Hermitage Orchestra (S. Sondeckis, Artistic Director), the Classica State Orchestra (A. Kantorov, Artistic Director) and the Admiralty Orchestra of the Leningrad Naval Base (A. Karabanov, Artistic Director).
